ReConnect
Seating from pandemic surplus
This project was a unique experience. Working within a contradiction- using a material that symbolized distance during the pandemic, to promote connection—was fascinating. Discovering how design can bridge such opposites really inspired me. The process of testing, adjusting, and refining made the final result special: a design that brings people closer.

KEY MOMENTS
Double Diamond process
During the development phase, I created multiple seating concepts for public spaces using recycled COVID-19 splash screens. I then observed passersby to analyze if and how interaction emerged with each design. I discovered that adding an interaction besides 'seating' increased passerby attention and curiosity.
Through observations and conversations with users in public spaces, I discovered that people struggled with physical closeness and social interaction after the pandemic.

This led to the formulation of the core problem: how can we create a safe and welcoming environment to bring people closer together again?
The final result is a sustainable seating solution that’s both functional and symbolic. It invites connection and has been well received for its comfort and message of recovery. A tactile element was added to increasy curiosity, encouraging people to touch and explore the material—helping them feel comfortable with ‘touch’ again.

IMPACT STRATEGY
This project is more than just a seating design—it’s a symbolic and functional intervention that transforms a material of separation into a tool for social reconnection. To ensure long-term impact, the strategy must focus on strategic placement, behavioral engagement, storytelling, and measurable results.
- strategic placement: where does it have the greatest impact?
- interactive use: how does it encourage social engagement?
- storytelling & awareness: how to communicate the transformation?
